MyanmarDestinations

As the largest mainland country in Southeast Asia, stretching from the Himalayas at the north to the glittering Mergui Archipelago in the south, Myanmar offers visitors the opportunity to explore an eclectic array of landscapes and cities, natural beauties and ancient architectural wonders. The scope of tourist attractions in Myanmar is vast, untarnished, and ripe for exploration.

The cities in Myanmar range from the riotous, colonial splendour of Yangon to the broad, dusty streets and rich royal heritage of Mandalay. Hikers can stride into the hilly jungles surrounding Hsipaw to spend the night in a Myanmar village, visit the multitude of hidden ethnic groups along the Thai and Chinese borders, and venture north to the frosty peaks in Chin and Kachin States.

Those keen to spend time on the beaches in Myanmar can choose between the virginal islands of Mergui, the sweeping white sand of Ngapali, and the resorts and festive ambience of Ngwe Saung, while culture vultures are offered the chance to amble about the ancient ruins of Bagan and Mrauk U, the most haunting archeological sites to be found in Southeast Asia, rivalled in allure only by Cambodia’s Angkor Wat and the Borobudur in Indonesia. Travellers can accompany the Intha fishermen on the placid waters of Inle Lake, visit the charming old hill stations of Pyin Oo Lwin and Kalaw, and venture to the summit of Mt Kyaikhtiyo in Mon State, where the stunning Golden Rock balances precariously on the lip of a cliff face.

Sampan Travel can take you to all of these Myanmar destinations and more. Our range of suggested journeys deliver an idea of how city tours, beach breaks and adventures into the Myanmar wilderness can be incorporated into one jampacked itinerary. Alternatively, there are suggested journeys for those keen to savour only certain aspects of this diverse country, for example visitors who are purely keen to recline on one of the idyllic Myanmar beaches.

To help you build up an idea of what there is in Myanmar and what you would like to see, we have provided in-depth descriptions and pictures of each destination we travel to, accessible via the links at the top left corner of this page. By choosing one of the four regional categories - Yangon, Bagan, Mandalay and Inle Lake - you will be able to research what is to be found in and around each destination. Further Up, Further In offers a scintillating introduction to the less frequented Myanmar destinations, such as Katha in the north (the setting of George Orwell’s Burmese Days) and the old port towns and unspoilt islands to the far south. You can also navigate to these pages via the interactive map above.
