Myanmar is world-famous for having the best rubies in the world. These come from Mogok, Myanmar’s “Rubyland”.
The “pigeon-blood” stones – referring to the much coveted colour of the most valuable gems – are sourced in the myriad mines around the town. These, along with sapphires, emerlads, moonstone, and amethyst, are on show in the town’s morning and afternoon markets. If possible, we will try and facilitate a visit to one of the mines.
But it need not be only about gems! Light trekking through Christian and Nepali villages can be embarked upon outside of the town, and it is now possible to visit the a British War Cemetery for fallen soldiers of the Third (and final) Anglo Burmese War of 1885.
So to keep the costs down, we have calculated a quote with VIP night coaches up and down from Mogok. However, if short on time, it is also possible to fly to Mandalay and from there be driven in a private car.
Either way, this trip offers a perfect escape over a long weekend to one of Myanmar’s least-visited towns.
