Kandawgyi Lake

Kandawgyi Lake is a popular recreational spot in Yangon. Now neighbouring a zoological garden, the lake was built by the British as a reservoir and today it is still sometimes known by the name Royal Lake. A variety of beautiful flowers thrive in Kandawgyi Park and welcome shade can be sought under the score of large trees. The park also incorporates a playground for children as well as restaurants and souvenir shops. Families and teenagers flock to the picnic areas in Karaweik Hall where it is possible to visit art exhibitions. In the morning the boardwalk over Kandawgyi Lake is a good place for a stroll or jog, and in the evening, the glittering reflection of the Shwedagon Pagoda ripples across the lake’s surface. On the southern side of the lake you will find the floating Shin Upagot shrine dedicated to the Buddhist saint Upagot, who is believed to protect people in moments of mortal danger. Towards the north of Kandawgyi Park is the quirky Utopia Tower, a construction of artificial rocks housing restaurants, bars and a viewing deck.
