18 Day
Sampan’s “Hilltops & Hinterlands” 18 Day Journey is for those travellers who have digested the guidebooks and read the reviews but are now keen to try something slightly different. This is a journey for travellers looking for an expansive trip that stretches the limbs while broadening the mind; a journey that gets the blood racing, and habitually surprises - in a good way.
Commencing in Mandalay, this journey will avoid the tourists traps where there are more cameras than locals, before heading up to the pretty British Hill Station of Pyin Oo Lwin. The train over the Gokteik Viaduct will take you to Hsipaw to commence a two day hike, before trying even more adventurous activities in Lashio.
After 48 hours in Yangon guests will journey down to the glorious Golden Rock in Mon State, followed by an exploration of the caves of Hpa An, and finally the town of Mawlamyine - the first British capital of Burma and a short drive from the Western Terminus of the Burma Death Railway.
DAY ONE Upon arrival in Mandalay you will be greeted at the airport and taken into the city. This first day you will be left at leisure. DAY TWO Today you will be taken to watch monks receiving their morning alms in Sagaing, before exploring the history of Burma’s final royal city. DAY THREE Drive up into the hills to the former British hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin. Visit the Botanical Gardens and nearby waterfalls. DAY FOUR Take the train over the Gokteik Viaduct. You will reach the sleepy town of Hsipaw - a former Shan princeton - mid-afternoon. DAY FIVE Trek up into the hills surrounding Hsipaw and spend the night in a local village. DAY SIX After a hearty, local-style breakfast, you will start walking back down to Hsipaw. This afternoon you can visit the “East Haw”, the former residence of Hsipaw’s last Prince. DAY SEVEN Today you will travel along the old Burma Road to the town of Lashio. DAY EIGHT In the environs of Lashio try your hand at mountain-biking, stand-up paddle boarding, and waterfall jumping. DAY NINE Fly to Yangon, staying in the hippest hotel in town.At a glance . . .
DAY TEN This morning you will be taken on a street food tour of Yangon breakfast eateries. In the afternoon you will be left at leisure to recover from all the food. DAY ELEVEN Today you will drive down into Mon State and then hitch a ride on a truck up to the Golden Rock atop Mt Kyaikhtiyo. Overnight at the summit. DAY TWELVE Travel into Kayin (Karen) State and the verdant landscape of Hpa An. DAY THIRTEEN Explore the caves and mountains surrounding Hpa An. DAY FOURTEEN This morning you will take a boat down to Mawlamyine, capital of Mon State, stopping of at the monastery of an audacious Mon entrepreneur from the colonial era. DAY FIFTEEN Today you will visit the Western Terminus of the Burma Death Railway, where thousands perished during its construction in the Second World War. DAY SIXTEEN Visit the entreprising island that some believe will one day be Myanmar’s answer to Hong Kong. DAY SEVENTEEN Take the train north back to Yangon DAY EIGHTEEN Today you will be left at leisure on your last day in Myanmar, before being transferred to the airport for your departure flight.
