Wai Wai's Place

Wai Wai’s Place is owned and run by Wai Wai, a vivacious and charming lady from Northern Shan State.

The hotel rooms are modest but tasteful. The real appeal here is Wai Wai herself and the gaggle of village ladies she had brought to Yangon from her home to work in the hotel. The food is authentic Shan cuisine – and utterly superb. It is served up on the roof, where in the evenings locals and expats often come for a more than a couple of sundowners. The hotel is ethical and sustainable, and supports an array of local artisans and social enterprises.

This hotel is situated in the district of Sanchaung, only twenty minutes walk from Shwedagon Pagoda, and amongst a fresh crop of cafes, restaurants, and bars, beginning to rival downtown Yangon as the centre of the city’s nightlife.

FLASH POINT: Wai Wai herself is a bundle of joy – the perfect hostess. Perhaps the only thing more delightful than her are the Shan noodles, which make for the perfect meal anytime of day.
