The Burma Campaign (1941-1945) of the Second World War was a battle of empires. The Japanese on one side, the Allies on the other. Although this theatre of war swept up men from all corners of the globe, the soldiers of the Forgotten Army are rarely remembered.

Travel from Kolkata to Kohima, deep in the Naga Hills of Northeast India. It was here in 1944 that the Japanese attempted to knock out the Allied forces and potentially march on Delhi. Instead, General Bill Slim’s galvanised Fourteenth Army repelled the Japanese back across the Chindwin River into Burma.

This multi-day trek follows the route of the Assam Regiment, racing back to Kohima in 1944. Starting in Jessami right on the Burma border, we'll attempt to match the achievement of the Naga soldiers by trekking the 124 kilometres - in 39 hours.

Dr Robert Lyman is the world authority on General Slim and the Burma Campaign. Rob is Slim’s military biographer and has written over a dozen books on the Second World War including 'A War of Empires' and 'The Reconquest of Burma'.
In addition to Rob, in both India and Burma, Sampan works with expert local guides. Often historians in their own right, these guides provide not only vast local-knowledge and experience, but also offer the perspective of the people that called these regions home, before they became infamous as battlefields.
