Family Trips

5 Day

Sampan’s Myanmar family trips are designed for those living in Yangon looking for engaging and authentic experiences outside of the city. The scale of “adventure” can be tailored depending on the age and enthusiasm of the children, but all of the trips centre around positive activities in the great outdoors.

Travelling with children in Myanmar is not always easy. Sampan’s family trips help guests embrace the breadth of Myanmar’s culture and idiosyncrasies – stretching legs and broadening minds in safe and comfortable environments.

We aim for seamless logistics throughout these Myanmar family holidays, all of which can be embarked upon over a long weekend or during half term.

Kalaw

Kalaw’s cool climate and quirky colonial architecture has made it one of the most loved towns of Shan State – and an ideal location for a Myanmar trip with kids.

This journey begins with a jungle trek circling the old British hill station and stopping for tea in the villages of the Pa’O and Taungyo ethnicities. Meet, learn about, and feed the elephants of Green Hill Valley – one of the finest family activities in Myanmar - before taking the train down to Inle Lake.

While allowing for plenty of time to reap the benefits of the fresh mountainous air, Sampan’s Five-Day Family Trip to Kalaw offers the chance to experience one of Myanmar’s most beautiful regions – and its most majestic creatures! – at close quarters.

Mergui

Hike and kayak from the coastal town of Mergui into the depths of Tanintharyi Region. Explore the history of one of Myanmar’s oldest towns before boarding a boat and venturing to the islands of the archipelago – one of the most exciting things to do in Myanmar with kids.

The scruffy but charming town of Mergui has a Dickensian air of skullduggery about it, while the inland ‘Tanintharyi Town’ – long pulled back and forth between the waring empries of Burma and Siam – is thick with history.

On this journey you will escape the standard tourist trails and instead dive into the turbulent maze of Myanmar’s past – while out on the islands steal a glance at its most opulent future.

Indawgyi

Fly to Myitkyina, capital of Kachin State, and take a boat out onto the confluence of the Ayeyarwaddy River. The following day you will drive to Indawgyi – Myanmar’s largest lake, roughly the size of Manhattan!

Spend your time cycling around its circumference, idly kayaking from village to village, and trying your hand at freshwater shrimping. While at the centre of the lake it is as placid as Myanmar gets, some of the larger villages on its banks are a hive of activity – with the freefall energy of a backwater border town.

Here at Indawgyi amongst the smiling faces of the Shan-Ni – the “Red Shan” – families can experience one of the farther-flung towns of Myanmar, untouched by the heavy hand of aggressive tourism.

Ngapali

Flying to Ngapali is one of the easiest family trips in Myanmar. For the culture vultures we can arrange a tour of Thandwe town and nearby fishing villages, while the more energetic may wish to go snorkeling and enjoy a sunset boat tour.

Ngapali – named so by a visiting Italian who was reminded of the town Napoli – is situated on the Bay of Bengal looking out over the Indian Ocean. As Myanmar’s premier beach destination, the hotels of Ngapali are well stocked to cater for a long weekend with children in Myanmar.

This five-day trip is easy to arrange for those living in Myanmar with a young family. It allows for the chance to rejuvenate and recharge batteries after the grind of the city. The children can frolic in the waves and run up and down the beach, while parents recline on the sand. Later on, when weary, the whole family can enjoy the best seafood of Myanmar while marveling at the glorious expanse of the Burmese sky at twilight.

Pindaya

Jump on bicycles and cycle from Heho down into the valley of Pindaya. Witness the ways of this charming town before hiking up into the hills to visit the Shwe Umin Golden Cave, traipse through the tea plantations, and meet friendly local beekeepers.

Pindaya is in Southern Shan State, a short distance north of Inle Lake in the Danu Self-Administered Zone. As such, it has its own unique culture separate to that of the Inthar and Pa’O situated around Inle – it is a town ripe for exploration for those in Myanmar with children.

The air does not get much fresher than that at Pindaya. Furthermore, hiking around these hills allows visitors to escape the busier trekking tracks between Kalaw and Nyaung Shwe. Finally, this journey also offers the chance to learn more about tea-leaf salad (laphet thoke - Myanmar’s favourite snack!) and how the honey of Pindaya is changing the fortunes of its farmers.
