Situated in the elegant Embassy Quarter of Yangon, the Governor’s Residence offers an indulgent sojourn in the country’s commercial capital. The hotel’s Monkey Bar downstairs provides an chic setting for a pre-supper tipple, as does the poolside restaurant.
FLASH POINT: The swimming pool is the most beautiful in Yangon. Cool down here and look out over the hotel’s neatly groomed lawn. Kick-back and keep an eye out for the two resident dancing peacocks.
Governor's Residence - Yangon, Myanmar
One of Yangon’s most celebrated heritage hotels, the Governor’s Residence occupies a magnificent teak mansion dating from the 1920s. Set amid gardens in the city’s leafy embassy district near the historic Pegu Club, the property is a striking example of Myanmar’s traditional timber architecture. The building was originally constructed as the residence of the Sawbwa (ruler) of Kayah State, one of Burma’s semi-autonomous princely states. Following independence, it served a variety of official functions before falling into disrepair. In the 1990s, a painstaking restoration saw the entire structure dismantled, numbered and reassembled, preserving its historic character while adapting it for modern use. Opened as a luxury hotel in 1997, the Governor’s Residence quickly became one of Yangon’s most iconic places to stay, renowned for its elegant teak interiors, wide verandas and tranquil gardens. The addition of a swimming pool and modern comforts was achieved without compromising its original atmosphere.
The rooms at Governor’s Residence are designed to complement the character of the historic mansion, combining colonial-era elegance with modern comfort. Rich teak floors, polished wood furnishings and traditional textiles create a sense of place that feels distinctly Burmese rather than generically luxurious. Thoughtful details such as antique-style furniture and local artwork reinforce the heritage atmosphere without feeling overly formal. While the accommodation has been updated over the years, the emphasis remains on comfort and character rather than cutting-edge design. Guests stay here not for ultra-modern luxury, but for the opportunity to experience one of Yangon’s most atmospheric historic properties.
Governor’s Residence has the best hotel grounds in the centre of the city, with spacious and well-groomed lawns, and the most beautiful pool in Yangon. For this reason, as well as attracting discerning travels looking to relax, Governor’s also attracts locals in the city. High tea is popular, as are cocktails either in the Monkey Bar or beside the pool. Such being the charms of the hotels, many business travellers to the city also prefer staying here, rather than in one of the corporate business hotels that pepper the city. You may well spot these types, ties and jackets discarded, slurping on a Pegu Club cocktail, laptop forgotten in the heady scent of leafy Yangon.
Governor’s Residence is set in Yangon’s Embassy Quarter, one of the city’s most elegant and tree-lined neighbourhoods. This area developed during the colonial period as the administrative and diplomatic heart of Rangoon, and it retains a quiet, residential character that feels distinct from the bustle of downtown. It continues to be where many nations have their embassies. Shaded streets, restored villas and consular offices sit behind high walls and mature gardens, creating a sense of calm that is rare in a city of Yangon’s scale. The nearby Pegu Club – once the social hub of British Burma – is a reminder of the area’s historical significance. From the hotel, guests are within easy reach of key sights including Shwedagon Pagoda and Kandawgyi Lake, while still being slightly removed from the noise and congestion of central Yangon.
There was a time, when Sampan first started-up in Yangon in 2013, that the hotel’s management regarded us as young bucks and small-fry and we struggled to get our foot in the door – let alone the best agent rates! All these years later, that has changed. The hotel is now run by a local company and we have been working with them closely for years. The current management at Governor’s are always ready to go the extra mile for Sampan’s guests – we just need to ask. Political turbulence in Myanmar has meant that some of the best and brightest of the country are no longer here. But the team at Governor’s continue to exemplify professionalism and that customary and captivating Myanmar charm.
